Enable Long Running Sessions in SSH

Using SSH requires the following workaround to keep long-running idle sessions open after an hour of inactivity. WPI IT recommends configuring Keepalives to 900 seconds.

Configure Keepalives on the Unix OpenSSH Client

  1. Open your ~/.ssh/config file
  2. Add the following:

    Host *
    ServerAliveInterval 900

Configure Keepalives on PuTTY SSH

  1. Open PuTTY
  2. Select the Connection Category on the left column
  3. Enter 900 in the Seconds between keepalives (0 to turn off)
  4. Select the Session Category:
    • Input your server settings
    • Select your connection under Load, save or delete a stored session (this is typically Default)
    • Click Save
